Mountain Loop Road

Daryl and I wanted to try hiking to the Big Four Ice Caves this weekend, so off we went on Saturday. It's a beautiful drive up Mountain Loop Highway so we were in for a treat! We had read the bridge on the trail was washed out, but logs were laying across the Stillaguamish River for crossing. 1/4 of the way into the hike we reach the river crossing. Daryl gets across carrying both of our cameras, I then let Storm off leash so he can swim across, next it's CJ's turn. Wouldn't you know, he won't cross! He's the one that swam in the pool all the time! He's the one that jumped into the pool off the waterfall! He's the one that would have to swim out for the toys because Storm was afraid to leave the pool steps. What happened???? We tried and tried, but the trail was getting busier so all hope was lost. We turned around and vowed to come back another day without the puppies.

The funniest story coming out of this though - Storm LOVES branches and sticks - he carries them around when we go hiking. During one of Storm's many swims back and forth across the river he found a rather large branch, grabbed it and swam with it all the way back to shore! I wish I had my camera...

So, since it was still early and we didn't want to head back home we decided to check out more of this Mountain Loop Highway; looking for great camping spots and future hiking trails. We stumbled across a scenic drive that made it all worthwhile. The mountain saddle had what looked like a glacier on top with streams running down the entire side of the mountain. It was beautiful! The pictures below don't even come close to doing this place justice.

How far from home you ask? Only an hour...................

BEAUTIFUL BLUEBERRIES!

This is the load of blueberries I just pulled out of the backyard. Breakfast this morning? Banana Creme yogurt with fresh blueberries and walnuts. YUMMMMMMMMM............ :-)

The Kitchen

Here is the place I've been performing my research and development to bring you tasty recipes! (It occured to me that the kitchen was not included in earlier house photos.) Click to view larger...

Slow Cooker Pork Chops

These are so delicious - it's the only way I cook pork chops now. They have been enjoyed by many and I get great compliments.

INGREDIENTS
1/4 cup olive oil
1 cup chicken broth
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon paprika
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon poultry seasoning
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried basil
4 thick cut boneless pork chops
salt and pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS
In a large bowl, whisk together the olive oil, chicken broth, garlic, paprika, garlic powder, poultry seasoning and basil.
Pour into the slow cooker.
Cut small slits in each pork chop with the tip of a knife, and season lightly with salt and pepper. Place pork chops into the slow cooker, cover, and cook on High for 4 hours.
Baste periodically with the sauce.

Back Patio

Here is an updated photo of the back patio (click to view to view larger). We've been working on getting it all cleaned up and colorful.

We've got both patio tables in their rightful places with umbrellas. We got 3 of the half wine barrels (one is not pictured) and put flowers in them. We have 2 additional pots, one with Basil and the other Garlic Chives. Daryl built a hammock stand so he can enjoy our wonderful summer days.

It's not the greatest photo - but it'll do for now. :-)

Beginning Harvests

So far we've had a lot of sweet peas - steam those veggies with a bit of butter and they are just like candy! Yum, Yum! The plants are not producing as much now so we may be at the end for this season - though we still have green beans, lettuce and carrots still growing.

The strawberry and blueberry plants have been giving me about a handful each week. If I let them stay on the plant a little longer they are incredibly sweet and juicy. They go straight from the plant, under some water and into my tummy! I just love walking out into the yard and picking a little snack. :-)

The cherry and apple trees don't have any fruit on them yet, but it's either an off year for them or it's still too early. Not sure on that yet. The other plants are growing like crazy and starting to flower... the roses are B.E.A. beautiful!

Visitors to WA

My sister and her two kids Jared and Alyssa generously took a week of their vacation time to visit us here in WA over Fourth of July week! We were so excited to have them stay with us... I don't have any photos to post of our visit, but I can still share the fun times!

They arrived on Saturday June 30th in the afternoon. We spent that evening just relaxing as they worked on adjusting to a 2 hour time difference. Sunday we went to the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle - which is a really great zoo!!! We'll be going back for sure!

Monday we went into Downtown Seattle and saw the Space Needle, Aquarium at the waterfront and Pike's Place Market. The famous fish throwers were busy that day as we saw plenty of action!

Tuesday we went shopping at Alderwood Mall and had pedicures done for the upcoming holiday. We had a nice surprise in the afternoon, our friend Dave from Arizona was passing through town on his two week driving vacation of the Northwest. Dave joined us at the house for dinner and spent the night before continuing on his journey the next day. I truly love having a full house, we all had a great evening.

Wednesday was Fourth of July and the local Naval Base opened its doors for a Freedom Family Festival. The USS Abraham Lincoln was in port so they were letting people on to check out the ship. It's important to note that this is still an active military ship just arriving back here from sea trials. Afterwards we came back home to enjoy some air conditioning as it was a very warm day. We barbecued dinner with neighbors Candice, Dirk and Tanner then watched the homeowner fireworks displays by our firepit. (You can buy fireworks here at the Indian Reservations, though it is technically illegal to set them off once you leave their land. Everyone does it anyway). I was quite amazed at the cool fireworks people are able to purchase. Daryl bought some of the legal ones (sparklers, roman candles and parachutes) to set off with the kids - which we did on the 3rd of July (also sitting by the firepit).

Thursday we decided on a beach day, so off we went to Deception Pass State Park where they have a sandbar that separates a lake from the Ocean so you can have your pick on where you want to play. Daryl brought the kayaks along so we spent the day sitting by the water, Alyssa and Jared really enjoyed kayaking, and just having a lazy day!

Friday we went shopping again, this time at the Seattle Premium Outlet Mall - WOW, this place is cool!! Stores like: Sony, Coach, Movado, Chico's, Tommy Hilfiger - just to name a few. We only got to a small portion of it before it was time to head back home. It's dangerously close to our house - like 15 minutes drive!!

Sadly Saturday it was time for Carrie, Alyssa and Jared to head home. On our way to the airport we stopped at Alderwood Mall where REI has a rock climbing wall - Jared scaled that puppy all the way to the top!! WooHoo Jared, you da man!

We hated to see them go as it was such a wonderful week. The dogs sure miss Alyssa and Jared playing with them everyday.

Thank you for coming to visit us - we really enjoyed having you and can't wait for you to come back!
